The low-profile baitcasting reel has nearly completely replaced traditional round baitcasting reels in sport fishing. Lightweight models with thumb triggers and ergonomic designs are enjoyable to use, and modern materials are also durable. Especially during winter, carbon/plastic composite frames are significantly more comfortable to handle than metal reels. Many models feature easy adjustments for the casting brake pad positions. The fewer pads in use, the longer, but more line-sensitive casts will be. Some reels also include a so-called magnetic brake, which further reduces spool overspin and tangles.
The purchase of a modern, high-quality low-profile baitcasting reel is recommended for anyone who fishes more than a few times a year. With the right adjustments, you can nearly eliminate tangles, but brakes that are set too tight will naturally reduce casting distances. However, if you only fish occasionally, an open-faced reel remains the right choice for you. The selection of the rod for a low-profile baitcasting reel always depends on the intended use; a soft trout rod should not be chosen for jigging and vice versa. Check out our baitcasting rods for more options. For lines on baitcasting reels, we recommend braided line. An excellent choice is, for example, Daiwa J-Braid.
For an additional fee, we will also properly spool braided line with backing line on reels purchased from our online store. This way, you can be assured that your reel is always filled to the right level, and thanks to the backing line, no line spinning will occur on the spool.
