Guideline Elevation Brook Fly Rod
Elevation Brook rods are shorter fishing rods specifically designed for smaller streams and other areas where a shorter rod enables effective casting due to thick shoreline vegetation and trees. The ‘Elevation’ in the series name may sound familiar as the Elevation range has been on the market long before these new additions. These Brook models maintain the same environmentally friendly features as other Elevation rods but have received slight cosmetic updates. The rods feature fewer metallic details and a grey thread, creating a style that in the broader industry is referred to as 'stealthy'. This stylish graphite grey appearance is accented with a subtle spiral pattern on the surface and a fine matte finish.
Components and Eco-Friendlier Choices
All possible loose carbon fiber scraps generated during the manufacturing process are collected before the water is released into the municipal water treatment. The 3A-grade cork does not include rubber reinforcements, which minimizes the rubber load. Instead, lead and paint loads have been reduced, meaning the metal parts of the reel seat are anodized in bright colors without lead or paint. Bright anodizing is, as you know, the least toxic process when handling aluminum reel seats. For the blank coatings, guides, and grip sections, Guideline has chosen a less toxic bio-based epoxy that has been tested and proven effective. Therefore, these rods contain fewer regulated chemicals, which is important as it also improves the working conditions for the rod builders by decreasing harmful odors. The rods are equipped with single-foot thin wire guides as well as KW-type guides. Guideline has utilized a gun smoke powder finish on their stainless steel surfaces, offering a durable option that is long-lasting without chrome plating, which contains lead. The rod bag and tube cover are made from recycled REPREVE™ polyester, leading in trusted fibers made from recycled materials (using raw materials such as plastic bottles). The tubes, on the other hand, are made from polypropylene (PP). The tubes are lighter and 20% slimmer (tube diameter) compared to PVC tubes, saving space and money when transporting rods from the factory through warehouses to stores. PP is not just a good recycling material.
Action
These rods feature a sophisticated “mid flex” action curve, meaning the rod bends quickly at the tip and mid-section. However, the recovery rate of the rod is high. The medium-fast action and rapid recovery blank make it perfect for fishing small streams in tight casting spaces, where even small casting motions can straighten the line as desired. As the rods flex gradually up to the handle while battling a fish, they allow easy use of thin tippets since the rod softens and dampens the fish's sudden movements. The lightweight blank structure also supports longer overhead casts. Equip your setup with compatible line, and your dream stream setup is ready to go!
Model-Specific Description
Brook 7'2” #3 is undoubtedly the right rod for the smallest streams where casting with a longer rod would be challenging due to the narrow width. On the other hand, many of these streams have lush and dense banks, significantly reducing casting space. With a short 7'2” rod, fishing in such confined spaces is highly effective, and the quality rod blank allows for precise and even slightly longer casts with small and light movements. Additionally, being extremely lightweight ensures the angler's hand does not tire during long fishing sessions.
Brook 8'0” #4 is suitable for slightly wider streams, thus better described as a rod for small rivers. For many, this model is a trusted choice for a Lapland dry fly rod. The rod has enough strength for back casts, making it suitable for still water fishing as well. If you plan to fish with something other than a dry fly, it would be wise to get a #6 or #7 rod suited for pond and lake work. For instance, casting a dry fly at long distances is easier with a six-weight rod. The Brook 8'0” #4 is also versatile for handling various types of cones, meaning you can cast a wide range of lines. Compared to its smaller sibling, the additional length and slightly heavier class allow for better line control during drifts (the so-called mend) and longer reach.
