The Savotta Jääkäri XL (also known as the Jääkäri Backpack) is an enhanced model originally designed for the Finnish Defence Forces' Modular Light Weight Load-carrying Equipment (Modular LJK or parachutist's backpack). The design process has fundamentally considered genuine user experiences, incorporating the best elements from numerous ideas into the Jääkäri XL. We have continued to develop it based on feedback, enhancing user-friendliness, durability, and aesthetics.
The Jääkäri XL carrying device exceeds the typical backpack. Its meticulously thought-out features and extensive "MOLLE" system create a modular and versatile work tool that adapts to the user's specific needs. Its narrow profile allows the user to ski and hike effortlessly in difficult and demanding terrains. Thanks to the robust, hand-welded aluminum frame and upgraded vest connection, the Jääkäri XL offers a stable carry. The support structure keeps the Jääkäri XL upright and distributes the load anatomically across the hips, preventing excessive strain on the back and shoulders even with heavy loads. The backpack's hip belt is detachable and can serve as a separate combat, gear, or pulk (sled) pulling belt if necessary.
The roll-top closure and compression straps on the main pouch secure the packed contents tightly, enhancing carrying comfort. Besides carrying features, the backpack is made of durable, high-quality materials under the principle of "made for the military." During field tests, we subjected the backpack to rigorous handling. We tested its durability by dropping it from a height of 350 meters and weighing it down with gravel for carrying tests, from which it emerged unscathed. We offer a 10-year warranty on the Jääkäri XL.
The main pouch of the Jääkäri XL (height 84cm (maximum with roll-top 112cm), width 32cm, depth 23cm) is designed to be narrow yet spacious enough to carry the necessary equipment for longer hikes. The opening of the main pouch closes with a conventional roll-top, easily operated even while wearing gloves, and the design is practically waterproof. When opened, the roll-top structure simplifies packing, allowing it to be rolled tightly according to the contents' size. The roll-top allows for a volume adjustment between 80-100 liters, ensuring a snug pack every time!
The opening is covered by a flap that closes with straps. The flap is attached on both sides with adjustable straps. This "floating" flap allows for easy overpacking and protecting the overflowing load. The generous lengths of the straps provide ample space for additional gear, such as a sleeping bag. Inside the flap is a spacious zippered valuables pocket (size 5l, dimensions 33cm, 31cm).
The interior of the main pouch features a closure hood, allowing the pouch to be divided into upper and lower sections. The upper section includes a pocket (35cm, 30cm) for a hydration bladder or other separately stored items. This pocket accommodates a 13.3" laptop or smaller tablets. In the center of the roll-top's lower section is a protective outlet for the hydration bladder hose, cables, or even an antenna.
Access to the lower section of the main pouch is facilitated through a zippered flap (flap dimensions 34cm x 34cm). The zipper has two pulls, enabling the flap to be opened from any desired point. The lower section also features quick-release adjustable rubber straps (2) for securing gear. Additionally, there are four mesh pockets (13cm x 13cm) for storing loose items and valuables.
With four cinch straps on the sides, the main pouch can be tightened securely even when partially packed. The cinch straps are equipped with quick-release buckles and are detachable, as well as freely adjustable with shortening buckles. The hand-welded DUR aluminum support frame connects to the vest harness via MOLLE loops, allowing the carrying device to be adjusted so that a weapon bag can be placed between the tubular backpack and frame.
At the bottom on the sides are open pockets with rubber drawstrings, suitable for holding small items or alternatively for securing a long tool's head or a water bottle, firmly held in place by the side cinch strap. These pockets also have metal rings at the bottom for water drainage.
The Jääkäri wouldn't be a Jääkäri without the modularity provided by the PALS webbing system, also known as "MOLLE".
PALS/MOLLE is a mounting system used in military applications in almost every country. This system has been developed for when absolute modularity and durability are required.
MOLLE is an acronym for: Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment. PALS stands for: Pouch Attachment Ladder System.
By applying this technology, the Jääkäri XL is created as a supreme modular unit. MOLLE is found on the front, sides, flap, and even the bottom of the Jääkäri XL. With MOLLE, you can attach any PALS-compatible pouch almost anywhere on the Jääkäri XL you desire. With suitable pouches, the Jääkäri XL can be freely expanded into a multifunctional carrying device that meets even the most demanding professionals' needs.
In addition to modular attachment possibilities, the MOLLE system reinforces and stabilizes the backpack. Each MOLLE loop on the Jääkäri XL can withstand over 100kg pull weight.
Long attachment straps run over the top flap and down to the midpoint of the backpack. Similarly, straps from the bottom of the backpack rise up to the frame. If necessary, a 25mm strap can neatly run along the MOLLE webbing and can be pulled up from any desired point. This allows for secure attachment of gear to the front of the backpack without excess loose straps. There are two rows of MOLLE on the bottom of the pack through which straps can be routed. This enables securing gear to the bottom as well, making it excellent for carrying rolled sleeping pads. Attachment points are also found on the backpack's hip belt.
On the front side of the Jääkäri XL, there are loops (2+2 pcs) for attaching loose items, such as a field axe when necessary.
Items that wouldn't otherwise fit in the backpack can also be secured behind the side cinch straps. The cinch straps are measured to be long enough to reach across the backpack to the opposite attachment if needed.
The Jääkäri XL features a new carrying system. The detachable hip belt is attached with MOLLE to the main pouch. The hip belt sits snugly in the right place and makes the journey comfortable by distributing the load properly onto the hip bones. This is further supported by a cushioned lumbar pad that rests against the back. The hip belt is fastened with a strong quick-release buckle that tightens inward and can be readily opened without risking accidental release.
The hip belt also allows for tightening the lower section of the main pouch, securing it into a tight package. The belt detaches from the vest harness with minimal effort and can function separately as a combat, gear, or pulk pulling belt. The belt features a double-row MOLLE webbing to which the user can add desired pouches as needed.
The base of the Jääkäri XL's carrying system is a DUR aluminum tubular frame, which is lightweight and durable. The backpack's wide straps are ergonomically shaped for carrying comfort, and their durability is enhanced by replacing rivets with stitches. The front of the shoulder straps includes a chest strap to even out the load and keep the backpack properly positioned on the shoulders. The length and height of the chest strap are adjustable. The shoulder straps also have attachment rings for small items.
Adjustments of the shoulder straps are handled by ladder buckles made from a special Delrin plastic blend. These buckles withstand harsh conditions, impact, and even freezing temperatures. The shoulder straps also feature separate adjustments for the distance from the frame. This adjustment is utilized based on the terrain or when transferring the load more onto the hips, relieving the shoulders.
The height and tightness of the vest and hip carry are infinitely adjustable, allowing the backpack to be fully customized to the anatomy and proportions of the wearer. Additionally, the harness allows the shoulder straps' width to be adjusted, making it suitable for both broader and narrower shouldered wearers. The backpack has no upper arch, enabling easy movement in tight spaces. At the back of the backpack is an attached carry handle, making it easy to move the backpack when it's not on your back.
