The Hikmicro Thunder functions both as a handheld thermal monocular and as a clip-on accessory that attaches to a riflescope. It connects to the firearm using a separately purchased adapter. It is mounted to the objective lens of the riflescope. The appropriate adapter is selected based on the outer diameter of the riflescope's objective lens.

When used as a clip-on device, it employs the riflescope's reticle, ensuring that aiming generally remains unchanged. (Aiming must still be verified; any necessary adjustments are made on the thermal camera, and there is no need to modify the scope's alignment. The reticle can be easily adjusted to target, for example, a chemical hand warmer or a can filled with warm water.)

With the rubber eyecup in place, the device can also be used as a thermal monocular. This feature proves extremely useful for tracking wounded game, or in any scenario where seeing temperature differences is beneficial.

The device features a clever power-saving mode. The startup takes a few seconds under normal conditions, but by quickly pressing the on/off button, the device can be activated instantly from a power-saving state. When the thermal camera is connected to, for example, a smartphone, you can activate the standby mode from the thermal camera. You can still see movement on the smartphone screen, and if necessary, with the press of a button, the thermal sight is ready for use. Once connected to the smartphone, taking photos or videos is also convenient, as they are saved directly to the phone.

The thermal camera includes its own battery. Charging can occur either with the battery in place or separately removed.
